tekom and TCLoc
What Is tekom?
Founded in Germany in 1978, tekom became tekom Europe in 2013 and is now the largest and most prominent professional technical communication association in the world. It serves as a network for more than 9500 professionals in the field of technical communication. One of its primary missions is to promote and develop technical communication in Europe.
Despite its name, tekom Europe supports professionals around the world by providing updated training and certification, organizing events and conferences, and promoting best practices and standardization within the industry. Tekom Europe also represents the interests of both creators and users of technical communication products.
Why tekom and the TCLoc Master’s Degree?
The technical communication association maintains active partnerships with several universities, including the University of Strasbourg. As a TCLoc partner, this association provides TCTrainNet, an international online training and certification program for our students which leads to the Technical Communicator (tekom) — Professional Level certification. This certification is also accredited by the British Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators (ISTC) and confirms that TCTrainNet reflects current best practices and guarantees its global significance. This partnership brings not only additional resources but also worldwide recognition to the TCLoc master’s program. Wherever you work as a technical writer, your certification will be recognized.
Obtaining the tekom certificate is mandatory to graduate with our master’s degree. It not only provides TCLoc students with a consistent understanding of technical communication’s basic principles but also a globally recognized and certified skillset, acting as a springboard for their career. Combined with the other courses in TCLoc’s curriculum, this certification is an asset to anyone looking to launch or boost their career in technical communication.
“The tekom certification came as an ideal complement to the TCLoc master’s program. It gave me the chance to study in depth all aspects of technical content creation.”
Silvia Döhnert, TCLoc Graduate 2017

What Does tekom Offer?
In addition to the certification, tekom offers TCLoc students a free membership to access all of its resources during their studies. Like the TCLoc master’s program, tekom connects its members to a variety of events, publications, and training opportunities, including the tcworld conference, the tcworld magazine, and the tekom fair.
The tcworld conference is the largest international technical communication conference in the world. It takes place every November in Stuttgart, Germany, and each year our students are invited and encouraged to attend. This event allows TCLoc students to learn more about the technical communication and localization industries as well as gives them the chance to connect with other students and professionals.
The tcworld magazine is available online and in print. It provides up-to-date information on various topics such as international management, translation and localization, business culture, and technical communication.
For those who want to learn more about the association and its events, tekom’s monthly newsletters provide information about conferences, international trends, and events in the field of technical communication.
